Beavers is about friendship and first experiences. For children aged six to eight, it takes the gentle start that Squirrels gives and opens it right up — more activities, more adventure, and the beginnings of doing things as a team.
A typical evening is fast-moving and hands-on. Beavers might build a marble run, cook something simple, learn a few knots, put on a short play, or head outside for a wide game as the light fades. The programme is deliberately broad so that every child finds something that clicks with them.
The outdoors is central. Beavers go on nature walks, take part in their group's family days, and for most it's where they'll spend their first night away from home — a colony sleepover in a hall, then a proper first camp under canvas. Those firsts are a big deal, and they're handled carefully, with plenty of support.
Along the way Beavers pick up real skills and a stack of badges: activity badges for things they've tried, staged badges that grow with them, and challenge badges that take a bit of effort over several weeks. Earning them builds the sense that “I can do things” that carries into school and everything else.
Just as much, Beavers is a place to belong. Children make friends outside their class and year group, learn to include others, and become part of a colony with its own traditions, its own leaders and its own scarf. Families often find it's where they get to know other people in the area too.
You don't need any experience to join, and new Beavers can come along for a couple of taster sessions first to see if it's for them.
What a term looks like
- Games, teamwork and outdoor wide games every week
- Making, building and creating things
- Trips and visits around Paisley, Barrhead and Neilston
- A colony sleepover and, later in the year, a first camp
- Activity, staged and challenge badges to work towards
- Taking part in district events alongside other Beaver colonies
